Jane works as a crew member aboard the free trader vessel Economic Downturn. She lacks many of the academic skills more professional engineers might have, since she is self taught, having hung around the ship yards on her home world getting to know the engineers who worked there, and trading information and access for other favours.

She isn't particularly good at getting along with other people, and is really just interested in finding out how machines work. The bits she can't see - the electronics and other stuff - don't interest her - she likes things that move and can be fixed with a wrench.
