Campaigns set during the present day are as greatly varied as any other setting. They have the advantage of drawing upon huge amounts of free and extensive sources of information, plus have the advantage that most players will be familiar with the setting. Of course, it's possible for a contemporary setting to be as alien to players as a historical or fantasy one is - not many players will have first hand experience of Africa for instance.

The definition of contemporary can be quite flexible. Yags defines it as pretty much the 20th century until the present day - so campaigns set during the Great War count. There's very little that is different from that period until now, except it what technology is available and what knowledge skills provide. A few skills, such as Computing won't exist at all, or will do so in a completely different way.
