The level of technology in Yags is rated according to the Technology Level of the society. For the real world, the current technology of the West would be TL 8, and covers the period from around 1980 to 2020.

Even in the real world though, it is difficult to measure how advanced a culture was. Some cultures had advanced civilisation even though they never left the stone age. Villages in remote parts of India and Africa mostly live in a medieval culture, but regularly use mobile phones to check crop prices.

The other problem with any attempt to rate technology is that there can be delays and set backs in the rise of civilisation. The Roman Empire was highly advanced compared to the centuries which followed its collapse, and it was over a millennia before the same level of urban planning was seen again. However technologies advanced in some ways beyond what Rome had been capable of before this point was reached, especially in the realm of arms and armour. So was Rome more high tech than the late medieval period, or less?
