There have been a couple of science fiction settings which have been played with Yags - Babylon 5 and Traveller. Both are quite different in scope, but quite similar in the style of technology available. It is this type of setting that Yags SciFi aims for, and some work has been done recently to try and flesh out the technology (i.e., equipment, hardware and gadgets) that underpins such a setting.
Updates haven't been published yet, but the latest changes are as always available in SVN.
The current plan is to split the science fiction backgrounds into two general categories - SciFi and UltraTech. The former is to provide a more 'Hollywood' style of science fiction, where the action is focused on people going places and doing things. This means limiting computer technology (limited AI's and uploading) and allowing for some 'magic' tech such as anti-gravity and hyperspace. This should suit Traveller, Babylon 5 and the home grown Mortals campaign.
UltraTech is closer to the science fiction of authors such as Charles Stross, Alistair Reynolds or Stephen Baxter. Hard super science, with rapid improvements with computer technology and nanotech, with a Singularity just around the corner. It would also be suited for a Cybertech campaign, or even something such as Transhuman Space.
The technology levels listed on the Traveller page will be used as a basis for the SciFi technology tree. Initially, this was based on GURPS Traveller, with 9 - 12 representing future levels of technology. It has been decided to expand this back out to something like the original Traveller range, of 9 - 16.
Both backgrounds will have similar levels of technology at TL 9, but will begin to diverge rapidly at TL 10+.
On a related note, the original Glendale website has been updated. As part of the planned updates will be background resources for Traveller, including space craft of the Imperium based on Yags SciFi rules for spaceship design.
Hopefully the first version of the SciFi Equipment article (including the space ship design rules and finalised technology levels) will be released in the next month or two. An UltraTech version will follow sometime after that.
